Question is will I have to put back my stock 1.5 that came with my hero? or what
Owners of HTC Android smartphones
should soon be receiving updates
regardless of which cellular network
operator they subscribe to
Leaf International Communications ,
distributors of HTC products in South
Africa , has revealed that firmware over - the-
air (FOTA) updates will become available to
all their Android smartphones slated to
receive such upgrades.
Currently FOTA is only available to MTN
subscribers , and the available updates are
only for the HTC Desire.
MTN initially said that any HTC Desire
connected to their network would be able
to download the updates , but some
MyBroadband members reported that this
didn ' t seem to be the case .
According to Leaf, getting updates for an
HTC Desire purchased from another
operator wouldn ' t be as easy as inserting
an MTN SIM card . Leaf has to load the
unique number of a device , known as the
IMEI , into their systems before a device
would be allowed to download updates
from their servers.
“ If MTN pulled the data ( IMEI numbers )
from the network database at a time when
the device wasn’ t registered , then the user
of that particular device will not receive the
update , ” Leaf explained.
This shouldn' t be a problem for much
longer as Leaf said that they would be
launching FOTA for all operators by the end
of January 2011.
“ We will load all the IMEI ’ s of devices we
have ever shipped to South Africa but this
will exclude all grey imports .”
Not all HTC Android devices receiving
upgrades
While only the HTC Desire has received
upgrades through the locally available FOTA
system , other HTC Android smartphones
are set to receive updates as well .
Leaf has revealed that the updates for the
Hero , Legend and Wildfire will become
available at the end of January 2011 as well .
The HTC Hero will receive an upgrade to
Android 2.1 ' Éclair ' and the other devices
will be upgraded versions 2.2 of Android ,
known as “ FroYo.”
FOTA updates will also be enabled for the
recently launched HTC Desire HD and
Desire Z.
HTC will soon confirm the list devices which
will receive Android 2.3 " Gingerbread"
upgrades , Leaf said.

But it doesn't say anything on data charges
They were debating some time ago to establish if they were going to do the Data for free, but we all no here in S.A. NOTHING is free! I'm still very happy with the custom Rom's available for the Hero, so I could not be fazed about the updates...
Samsung Galaxy Note II GT-7100 - Rooted CWM - PhoeiniX ROM - XXDLK7 - JB 4.1.2 - RedPill Kernel
HTC Desire - Rooted with Touch EXT4 - ParanoidAndroid - JB 4.1.2

As far as I'm told, you're responsible for the charges ... so use wi-fi.
Come get some

I'm rather impressed with LEAF for actually getting the OTA up and running. Looks like they are upping they're game a bit! still need to go a long way before faith are restored in them!
