    the links http://tinyurl.com/MOTODEFYFroyoUpdate or
    http://tinyurl.com/MOTOMILESTONEFroyoUpdate "

    the links cant be found

it will work on MB525 with motoblur but not on MB525 WITHOUT motoblur... i tried everything to get to 2.2.2 but then rather rooted my phone and then flashed 2.2.2 on the phone and install a MOD CM7 and now i have gingerbread 2.3.4 and runs on 1GHz smooth and fast and happy with the decision

Yep, I can't upgrade either with a Non Motoblur phone. Got from Vodacom. Can't believe they'd have upgrade for MotoBlur but not non MotoBlur. Actually, no, wait, anything is possible.

How easy is it to root / flash phone? I'm not completely sure I want to void the warranty.

Rooting is very easy and there are one click methods too. Even if you managed to screw it up, you can always just revert back to your old Rom. It would be quicker (if anything happened with your phone) to claim from insurance... Watery grave anyone?? hehehe
