Microsoft has launched their first Android app called Microsoft Tag, previously available on Windows Mobile, iPhone, Blackberry and Symbian devices.
Microsoft Tag is a free application that scans Microsoft Tag barcodes using your phone’s camera. Tag allows you to scan in any Microsoft Tag barcode and receive information on that product.
Microsoft Tag is essentially a custom Tag system whereby a barcode no longer actually looks like a barcode. Look at the example below to view how a Microsoft Tag custom tag is created:

Some everyday uses for it include scanning barcodes on products, books, DVD’s and games (athough they will need to be in the Microsoft Tag format); however there are some more exciting uses for it which include scanning barcoded adverts in Magazines and Newspapers and even scanning in contact information via barcodes, social networking pages or for discounts and promotions (My guess will be that this won’t be majorly common in South Africa, at least not yet).
For example, you may be paging through a magazine and see an advert for a game that looks interesting and want more information, just scan in the barcode and it will take you to the games website.
If picked up in South Africa, this could be a great method of making life easier for consumers as well as marketing products for businesses.
So go on and download the app, turn your phone into an information tool and find your information with ease. To download the app, point your Android’s browser to http://gettag.mobi
