Lekgotla in Nelson Mandela Square bore witness to the official South African unveiling of the Motorola RAZR on the warm evening of the 27th October 2011.
At 7.1mm thick, currently the thinnest smartphone in the world, with distinctive and unique styling, state-of-the art technology inside and a splash of MOTO mojo, Motorola is looking to deliver a truly awesome consumer experience with this sexy little number.
South Africa holds the honour of being the 6th country since 18 October to see a launch, and will also be one of the forst countries selling the phone to the public, with sales due to start around mid November.
Vodacom will have exclusivity for a short while, at a retail price of R6,999.00 and on a Business Call contact at a fairly reasonable R269.00 per month on a 24 month contract.
Have a look at the full list of specs below to help finalise that decision!

Brief Feature Rundow:
Among the innovations that Motorola has added, is fully encrypted, secure Enterprise capability.
They have cleverly kept work away from your personal life by separating the memory storing the Enterprise data from your personal data. Enterprise capabilities are accessed by logging in to the service. It is also possible to remotely wipe the phone should it be stolen, or an employee resigns from the company. However, the persona; partition will not be affected, enabling a smoother transition for an employee. The phone also integrates with Citrix, and comes with MotoCast, allowing the user to remotely access a computer from across the internet to retrieve files and documents.
Webtop – A desktop experience in your pocket
Like the Atrix before it, the RAZR is compatible with a host of various docks, which, when connected to them, will activate a separate OS on the phone – Webtop. This provides a desktop experience when using a larger screen.
The phone is compatible with Bluetooth keyboards and mice (Mouses?), essentially making it a truly miniature PC – perfect for those business travelers who like to travel really lightly. The full laptop dock is also available, and will be compatible with future devices as well.
Motorola has made the phone fairly water resistant by utilising technology called Spash Guard. The outer and inner parts of the phone are coated in a substance called micron silicon, which helps protect the phone from its nemesis – Water Damage.
The RAZR also has kevlar weave on the back, strengthening the phone, while keeping it light weight and feeling like the quality device that it is.
Motorola mentions that the battery should easily last at least a day and a half of regular use, thanks to an application called Smart Actions.
The RAZR will quickly learn your routine, knowing when to turn WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth on and off. This will help with unnecessary waste of power should you forget to turn WiFi or Bluetooth off, as well as make life extremely convenient. Ie – It will learn that at 7am, you turn your Bluetooth on in your car to sync up with the hands free. It will then do this automatically, and turn itself off when you reach work.
Motorola has definitely emerged from a quiet year on the SA front with a clear competitor to the likes of the Galaxy S II and HTC Sensation.
Expect a more detailed analysis later this weekend, as well as a rundown of the event itself, including photos and videos. For now, the press release is below!
Motorola Mobility Reveals Motorola RAZR™ in South Africa: Impossibly Thin Meets Head-turning Innovation
Slick design and features with wow factor, available from Motorola Mobility and Vodacom
JOHANNESBURG – Oct. 27, 2011 – Say hello to the jaw-dropping new Motorola RAZR™, brought to you by Motorola Mobility. Impossibly thin and lightweight, this smartphone is loaded with sexy curves. Boasting a gorgeous sculpted glass face, diamond-cut aluminum accents and a hyper-vibrant 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Advanced display for incredibly vivid images, Motorola RAZR also sports KEVLAR® fiber (yes, that KEVLAR) and Corning® Gorilla® Glass to help the screen stand up to scratches and scrapes. In fact, every part of Motorola RAZR is protected by a splash-guard coating – even the electrical boards inside.
While they’re still dazzled by the outside, hit them with what’s on the inside. A cool 1GB of RAM hooks up with a dual-core 1.2GHz processor and Android™ 2.3 to get you a lightning-fast user interface and the power to multi-task like never before. Rock your playlists while you check your email, breeze through photos – all at the same time, without delay. Motorola RAZR comes preloaded with the Motorola MotoCast™ app1, giving you the power to stream or download content from your home or work computer straight to your device so your personal content is always within reach. Watch movies on a screen that sports a wider range of colors than most LCD HDTVs. And when you’re tired of watching (as if), use the cinematic-quality front-facing 720p HD video camera and 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with even sharper 1080p HD video capture to create your own movies – all with image-stabilization technology to turn your life into art without breaking a sweat.
“With the new Motorola RAZR we have re-imagined an icon. The most captivating Android-powered smartphone on the scene, it’s thinner than your friends’ smartphone and better looking too!” says Megan Nicholas, mobile devices lead, Motorola Mobility South Africa. “We partnered with Vodacom to launch Motorola RAZR, and we know Vodacom customers will be lining up to be the first to have the next generation Motorola RAZR.”
Work Smart, Not Hard
Government-grade encryption protects your email, contacts and calendar so you are business ready. Even your strict IT manager will be impressed. Work smart with Smart Actions – a preloaded app on Motorola RAZR that that lets you automate everyday tasks and enable better battery life. Smart Actions can turn down the ringer when you step into work, change the Bluetooth® and GPS settings when you get home to save battery, or send a text to someone if you miss their call – letting you focus more on what’s actually important.
Accessories that bring a whole new universe to life
Motorola RAZR is powerful on its own but when combined with Motorola’s accessories, you unleash a world of possibilities.
Work hard, play hard! With the Motorola RAZR Work and Play kit, plug the device into the HD Multimedia Station to connect to your HDTV, speakers and other peripherals for large-screen entertainment. Watch movies, edit documents, video chat with the built-in webcam and browse the web with the full Firefox browser. Need something smaller?
