I have a SE X10 and cannot get it to update.
It goes to the point where it starts up while I hold the 'back key'
and then once it starts up, it asks to mount the phone, then nothing happens!
Has someone solved this?

The update service requires an active internet connection. If you don't already have the most up to date version of PC Companion then it will prompt (no, insist) you to update that first. You should also make sure your phone's battery is fully charged (standard practice I guess, but you won't be prompted to do this until half way through the update process).

The Android update itself is a ±120MB download.

Unfortunately something went wrong during my update ("update failed" was only explanation I got). I had to take my low cost housing brick back to my service provider for repairs. Luckily it came back with Android 2.1. Your mileage may vary, but next time I think I'll ask if my service provider can do the update for me.

The update is well worth it: it actually makes your smart phone smart:
* now you can actually send contacts via Bluetooth etc
* there's a nice Smart Search widget that allows you to find a contact named Granny by tapping 4726 (just like my old SE phone had)
* I can install Adobe Reader: now I can actually read annoying email attachments the way the author intended them to be read (this might have been in the market before, but I never came across it). More applications are supposed to be available now which were previously available to Android > 1.6 only.
* video now has autofocus (OK, I copied that straight out the promo video)

I'm just not so sure about the screen lock function. Now you have to press home twice and slide the lock symbol across the display. I liked it better when you just had to press menu (or whatever that key was) twice.
